Major upgrade: Competitor Discovery

Major upgrade: Competitor Discovery

One of our most popular SERP analytics features has always been our Competitor Discovery tool.

The reason it’s so popular is similar to the popularity of our Top 20 data set: it provides a comprehensive view of Google’s index across any volume of queries. This matters both for SERP and generative AI / LLM experiences (this is largely where citations come from).

That being said, our old version was starting to show its age.

The architecture powering it was not doing a great job of keeping up with our growth in recent years, so we decided to completely rebuild it and add a number of new features along the way.

Domain trends with market share

The table below the charts shows the high level trends per domain, along with things like volatility, growth rate, and market share trends.

The default depth is the top 20 domains on the SERPs but going deeper is just a click to get a leaderboard of the top 50 domains.

You can drill into each domain to get URL-level trends which I’ll show below.

Market share heatmap

In addition to the bubble chart showing the competing domains by query and growth rate, another favorite view is the market share heatmap.

It’s easy to read and the best thing about it is you can also drill into each domain from this view, getting a lot more granular data which I’ll talk about in the next section.

Domain analytics for URL-level insights

Clicking into the domain is where things get really interesting.

For each query, we have the full list of every URL from that domain that appears in the SERP for the selected date range.

As you can see in the chart, URLs will frequently blip in and out of visibility, so it’s really import to keep track of this, both for your own sites and for competing domains.

Key takeaways and use cases for this data

This feature set gets used regularly by our clients for the following purposes:

  1. Market share and benchmarking / building competitive leaderboards
  2. Competitor discovery by content segment and keyword group
  3. URL-level tracking for each query to identify the types of content that perform the best
  4. Domain categorization and management in our blocking list for Maximum Potential Rank tracking
  5. And more..
